Studio Stuff

I can’t help it. I still love studio photography. Not the stiff, posed, positioned, portraiture kind - there’s nothing worse than a smiling head - but the new, fresh looks seen in glossy mags and coffee table books. Even though this kind of photography will never be pure-photojournalism…I like to think it can still come close. Especially if it’s done just-so. In those moments between the smiles. Between the broad grins and the knowing. When the almost-bride or couple are caught unaware. When they’re relaxing back into themselves and each other, having a word or a glance between shots. I think these moments can be just as wonderful in-studio as out. And for me there’s still something about bright vivid expressions against stark white - when there’s nothing else to catch your eye but the person and their personality - that just can’t be beat.

And that’s my ode to yesterday’s studio session. We had arranged to do an engagement session at the lake but the heat just would not be borne. So at the bride’s request we took our studio ….umbrellas, lights, backgrounds etc…(what can I say, we come prepared) and relocated to the couple’s home where we did the shoot in their living room. And it worked wonderfully, if I do say so myself.
